Meet Woman on a Mission, Kimberly Dotseth

Meet Kimberly Dotseth, luxury real estate broker and Owner of Blend Luxury Real Estate in San Diego. She has spent decades building her business on her own terms. We're honored to share just a bit of her journey with you.

The Vision Behind Blend Luxury Real Estate

Kimberly's path to residential real estate wasn't the expected one. Her commercial colleagues didn't understand the move.

"When I switched from commercial real estate to residential, all of my commercial colleagues laughed. They weren't impressed. But I always wanted to hand people house keys."

She built her reputation from the ground up, and by 2007 had earned the freedom and standing of a broker in every way but title. So she decided to make it official.

"I thought, 'Why not become a broker?' I did and opened my own shop the day I passed the test. I wanted all decision-making power with me."

What She Loves Most About Her Business

For Kimberly, owning her business gave her back something she had wanted for years.

"Having my mornings to myself! I literally thought to myself for years, 'One day, I am going to have my mornings back!!' Now at age 64, I run a full-time business but never book anything before noon. My motto is to try and have a blank calendar for most of the week. That way, when someone calls, I can be available at any time."

Highlights She's Proud Of

Kimberly has more than one moment she looks back on with pride.

"In 2012, I was named the Broker of the Year by the San Diego Association of Realtors, out of 15,000 members. That was my Academy Award!"

She's also an author. In 2023, she wrote the book "She Gave Her Pearls" about Betty Broderick, the notorious San Diego murderer who passed away this year. "I got to know her a bit during the research and writing. She was a fascinating person. I may update the book now that she's gone."

And last year, at 64, she took on a personal challenge that she completed with perserverance and grit. "I did my first half-marathon. It was brutal. I walked it because I am not a runner, but I'm married to a marathon runner, so I needed to up my game. He walked it with me. The La Jolla Half is NOT a walking race. But we walked it and came in second to last. That's love."

The Challenges Along the Way

Kimberly has been candid about what's changed in the industry over the years she's been in it.

"I find as I get older, there is a lot of dismissiveness in the real estate world coming from our younger chickadees. With age comes a deep bank of skills. Take us seriously because we run things. Real estate is more than a pose on your phone or a post."

Advice for Women Starting Their Own Business

Kimberly's advice cuts through the noise.

"Don't get too caught up in 'buy my program' noise on Instagram. Just take a lot of quiet time for clarity. What do you want? How do you want your day to look? What do you want to earn? This contemplation should be done with no TV, music or distractions. You should only want to answer to yourself."

Life Outside the Business

When she's not running Blend Luxury Real Estate, Kimberly is enjoying the life she's created.

"I like wine with my husband on the patio, I am a cat mom, I am a shopper and fashion person. I am very interested in photography and cameras. My husband is a broker with my firm, so we have what we call 'broker talk,' best handled outside around 6 PM with a nice Chardonnay."
