Meet Woman on a Mission, Shunika Terry

We’re excited to feature our client Shunika Terry, an incredibly talented hair designer and department head whose work can be seen in critically acclaimed films, popular television series, and at high-profile red carpet events.

Based in Atlanta, Shunika brings more than 25 years of experience as a hair designer and department head to her work in the film & TV industry. Her work has been recognized throughout the industry, including a recent Critics Choice Award nomination and recently announced Oscar shortlist nomination for Best Hair Design for the movie Sinners.

Shunika’s credits include major film and TV productions such as Sinners, The Matrix Resurrections, Dope Thief, Atlanta, and Mare of Easttown, to name a few. Beyond film and TV, her work is also seen at high-profile events including the Met Gala, where her hair design is showcased on a global stage.

Her Journey and Career Path

Shunika’s journey began in Dallas, Texas, where she earned her cosmetology license while still in high school. She went on to build a strong foundation through salon work and advanced training, developing a passion for wig design, period styling, and character-driven hair.

Over time, her career naturally evolved into film and TV. As her work expanded, so did her role on set. Today, Shunika serves as both a hair designer and department head, overseeing teams and executing looks that support story, character, and vision across each production she works on.

Awards, Press, and Industry Recognition

Shunika’s work has been celebrated through a range of prestigious awards, nominations and press that reflect both her creative excellence and her impact within the industry as a woman on a mission.

Her recent Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Hair for the movie Sinners places her among a distinguished group of creatives recognized at one of the industry’s most respected awards shows. She's featured in a Variety magazine article, where she speaks to her work on Sinners and her approach to working with natural hair texture, allowing the hair to support the character rather than overpower it.

She has been honored by New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT) with an award recognizing her contributions as a hair designer and department head who is shaping the future of film and television. Her work has earned an Emmy nomination for Best Contemporary Hairstyling for Mare of Easttown, as well as a Guild Award nomination for her hair design work on The Matrix Resurrections.

Shunika’s process and creative insight have also been featured in a Vibe magazine article where she talks about recreating the iconic looks for the TLC CrazySexyCool biopic and what it took to bring the group’s hairstyles to life in a way that honored their legacy and served the storytelling of the film.

Showcasing Her Work Online

Shunika contacted me because she needed a long overdue website redesign. Her work and portfolio had grown significantly, and she needed a website that reflected that.

I designed a website with a cinematic aesthetic, using bold typography and warm burnt orange accents that allow her vast portfolio to take center stage, while still reflecting her personality throughout the site.

The pages and navigation were thoughtfully organized to showcase her work across TV and film, events and red carpet, period work, and character transformations, along with behind-the-scenes moments and dedicated sections for trailers that feature her work on screen.

Designing Shunika’s website also gave me firsthand insight into her work ethic. Even after long days on location, she sent over carefully curated images late at night, organized and ready to go. While it was a detailed and time-consuming process, she remained consistently responsive throughout a fast-paced design timeline.

The goal was to create a website that serves as a true calling card for Shunika, especially during awards season. A place where her work, credits, and recognition are clearly presented and easy to share with studios, collaborators, and press. Mission accomplished.

It was an honor and absolute pleasure to work with Shunika to create a website that reflects her journey, her leadership, and her incredible hair design work that continues to set her apart in the industry.
